California Teen Falls Into Snake Pit: Survives Six Venomous Snake Bites While Looking For Cellphone Service
Vera Oliphant, a 16-year old girl who fell into a snake pit is recovering from six snake bites. The California teen was looking for cellphone service when she accidentally fell into the snake nest.
The venom from one adult snake and six of her baby rattle snakes left the young girl immobile, however managed to get to her uncles house before collapsing. Lucky to be alive, Oliphant told ABC News "I was feeling numb and paralyzed. I had black vision and I saw bubbles," she added, "It felt like needles were stabbing me... it burned so hard and it felt like a bomb just exploded in me. It's really hard to describe."
The amount of venom was so critical that the girl went into anaphylactic shock twice and even lost consciousness several times. Because the Oliphant was rushed to the hospital doctors at the Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa were able to save her. She received 24 doses of anti-venom and remained in the hospital for four days in intensive care.
The teenager is happy to be alive and grateful to be returning to school soon, and will be more cautious and attentive,"Be careful where you step," she said. "If you don't need to, just wait until you are somewhere that you can call people."
