Hurricane Sandy strong winds had exposed a 90-year-old ship that was buried under sand. The ship was found on Fire Island, outside of Long Island, N.Y.

The remains of the old ship is said to be that of Bessie White. The ship was located four miles east of Davis Park, in the Fire Island National Seashore.  In a heavy fog, the Canadian schooner carrying crew members and tons of coal went aground a mile of Smith's Point in either 1919 or 1922. The men and their cat on the sinking ship survived. The crew managed to escape on two boats,  even though one capsized, only one member was injured.

Skeletons of the ship first exposed it self in a nor'easter in 2006.  Archaeologist are examining the  shipwreck before the shore reburies the bus size remains. The parks public affairs specialist, Paula Valentine said, "There's so little of it left we may not be not be able to determine which ship it actually is, but we may be able to learn more about its age," she said. "It's just a rare treat to see something exposed."
