Mexican Mayor Maria Santos Gorrostieta was found beaten to death in a ditch. According to BBC, the 36-year-old mayor who survived two assassination attempts was reported missing by her family three days before she was found.

In 2009, unknown gunmen targeted the mayor's car she was traveling in with her husband, Jose Sanchez who died in the attacks. Prior to her murder, she was targeted and seriously injured after gunmen opened fire on her. Surviving two attacks, Gorrostieta could not understand why she was being attacked, but continued to work in office. Mexican officials have been attacked by the drug cartel in Mexico which has caused the Mexican government to increase security. Since President Felipe Calderon declared war on drug traffickers, 20 mayors have been assassinated in six years.

Mexico's war against drug traffickers have been so intense that death tolls keep rising in medium-sized towns. Early this week Mexican State beauty queen was shot and killed after being caught in a shootout with drug traffickers and soldiers in Northern Mexico. The 20-year-old beauty queen, Susana Flores Gamez was found lying near an assault rifle after the gun battle. State prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said,"She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout," he said. "That's what we're going to have to investigate."
