'Clerks’ Director Kevin Smith Making ‘Mallrats’ Sequel Titled ‘Mallbrats’

It doesn't seem like it but 20 years ago Kevin Smith delivered Mallrats to the world. It's one of the many films in Smith's early repertoire that has reached cult status. This it's why it almost seems too good to be true that the movie will be getting a sequel. Smith made the announcement yesterday on Facebook and said the movie will be called Mallbrats. Returning for the sequel is Jason Lee, who will be donning the role of slacker Brodie Bruce once again. Joining Lee will, of course, be Shannon Doherty, Michael Rooker, Jason Mewes and Ethan Suplee. It's unknown whether the Batman, Ben Affleck, will reprise his role of the overconfident mall antagonist.

Smith made the announcement after posting on Facebook that the movie's rough draft is partially complete:

"IT'S MALL OR NOTHING," Smith posted. "20 years in the making. 113 pages fulla old friends, new jokes and a bloody battle with Stan Lee! This is for you, Jim. Wish you were here... #MallBrats"

The "Jim" smith is referring to is Mallrats' old producer James Jacks. Jacks passed away a year ago and wanted Smith to make a Mallrats sequel. It looks as if Smith is finally getting to the project in honor of his old friend.

In Rolling Stone, Smith said the project will be a fun one for him.

"Lately I've been doing this thing where I'm like, 'Do you want to do what's good for your career, or do you just want to have fun,"" he said. "Nobody's clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It's been like 20 years."

Mallrats was released in October 1995. The movie initially made little at the box office and wasn't received well by critics but still, despite all that, the movie eventually became one of Smith's more popular films.
