'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner NYPL Interview [VIDEO]: Talks Don Draper Coca-Cola Ad, AMC Finale
Earlier this evening, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner appeared in conversation with author A.M. Homes in what will be his only press appearance since this past Sunday's finale of his iconic AMC series. MStars News was in attendence at the New York Public Library to watch Weiner's event as part of the Live From The NYPL. During the interview, the writer-director-producer discussed the final season of Mad Men, the entire series and even that famed last scene: Don Draper's Coke ad.
Yes, it's true – Don Draper did in fact leave the enlightened state from which we saw him last, went back into advertising and created what Weiner believes to be one of the best ads ever created in the history of the business.
On the public's reception of the finale, the creator admits to being pleased, specifically "that people enjoyed it and seemed to enjoy it exactly as it was intended."
An interesting part in the evening came when Weiner talked up something he didn't quite realize until the series was drawing close to its end. "Don likes strangers," he says, further noting that Draper not only likes strangers but he likes seducing them. Which is when an epiphany struck him: "And that's what advertising is," he says.
But of course, he did admit, "Once you get to know him, he doesn't like you."
Take a look at the talk below, via the NYPL:
To celebrate the final episide, the event crew gave out a little prize piece––a bottle of Coke. At the end, the crowd raised a glass to what some are calling the most genius series ever created.
