'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Alcohol Drink Aftermath: Doctor Defends MTV Star's Birthday Celebration!

Teen Mom star Amber Portwood recently shocked fans when she was pictured indulging in alcohol on her birthday after returning from rehab for a drug addiction. While the MTV star denied any wrongdoing, she has a doctor on her side that agrees drinking alcohol does not necessarily lead to a drug relapse.

"Many individuals who have a history of struggles with substance abuse turn out to be able to return to non-problematic use later in life," Dr. Adi Jaffe, co-founder of Alternatives Treatment Center, told Wetpaint. "In fact, this is especially true when the drug dysfunction happened earlier in life (high school and college-age range) as the vast majority of young adults grow out of this highly-experimental phase with little to no problems. Amber might fall into that category."

"The specific recommendation would depend greatly on a number of factors including previous drug experience, age of problem onset, family history, and more (trauma history, co-occurring mental health diagnoses, etc.)," he continued. "Again, the safest thing is to be transparent about the process and, if there's a need, to get help for any small issues as they come up."

While Dr. Jaffe believes "never touching another mood-altering substance would technically be the safest option," he told the gossip site that unfortunately "for many individuals, it's a pretty unrealistic one."

As MStars News reported, the MTV mom posted a photo on Twitter of a surprise birthday picnic her fiancé Matt Baier made for her that included glasses of wine.

"Amber loves picnics and doesn't get to have them very often, since she's so busy," a source told Radar Online. "They had a great time!"

When Twitter followers cried out about her alcohol consumption, Amber shot back by tweeting that liquor was never her issue. "Yes I was I don't have a drinking problem never have I was an addict..." she wrote.

Little Leah's mom then said, "People yes I drink wine on special occasions.. my problem was pills never alcohol...love" and telling the haters to "quit acting childish I'm 25 I can drink wine I don't have a problem with alcohol."
