'Tron 3' Cancelled - Olive Wilde, Garrett Hedlund Movie Dead at Disney
It looks like Disney has officially given up on the third installment of Tron, which would've been the sequel to director Joseph Kosisnksi's Tron: Legacy. Stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to return as Sam Flynn and Quorra, respectfully, but the film is now dead in the water. Confirmed earlier this year, Tron 3 had fans of the series pretty excited for the next chapter. Plus, Wilde announced her own casting news about a month after the project was announced, sharing some details on the plot and her character.
"The delay has only ever been story, finding the right story. It hasn't been anything else. There's never been a time where we wanted to go and then schedules got in the way," Wilde explained at the time. "I love this character of Quorra so much and I've built her with Joe Kosinski and we took her such a long way from what was written to what we made."
Unfortunately, it looks like we won't get to see what happens next.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources claim that the film was never greenlit, despite the stars and the director coming on board. Additionally, Disney was reportedly going after Jared Leto for an important role in the new film, but couldn't get him (via Slash Film).
But is there still hope for the film? There could be thanks to a new petition started by fans, which already has over 10,000 supporters!
"Tron: Legacy grossed over 400 million dollars and helped more fully realize the world created in the original Tron," Fan Lucas Lowman stated on the petition's Change.ORG page. "It's a shame that Disney has elected not to move forward with a third Tron film as the universe is ripe to be explored. Sign this petition so that we may show Disney that The Grid is too great to never be shown again and to prove that Flynn lives."
