Reports confirm that Beatles legend Paul McCartney will substitute for the late Kurt Cobain during a special Nirvana reunion performance at the highly-anticipated 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden in benefit of the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. McCartney will join long-standing Nirvana front men Dave Grohl (drummer) and Krist Novoselic (bassist). Other big-name musicians set to hit the stage on Wednesday evening (Dec. 12) include Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton, Kanye West, Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi, and Billy Joel.

The Sun confirms that Grohl recently reached out to McCartney, asking if he'd step in for Cobain onstage for the 12-12-12 concert. According to McCartney - "I didn't really know who they were... They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said, 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me, 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it." The trio have been rehearing in-secret for the past couple weeks.

Cobain and Novoselic formed the iconic grunge band Nirvana back in 1987, and Grohl joined as a replacement drummer in 1990. The band became the heart of the Seattle grunge scene up until Cobain's unfortunate suicide in 1994. Later that same year, Grohl formed the mega-popular rock band Foo Fighters. McCartney performed with Grohl at the 2012 Grammys.

The 12-12-12 Sandy benefit concert airs live at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Producers believe over 2 billion viewers will tune in to the program. For more info on how to catch the live event and how to donate, go to the 12-12-12 homepage.
