Jovan Belcher, Kasandra Perkins' Murder Suicide: Mother Says 3-Month-Old Daughter Paternity Argument Lead To Deaths
Jovan Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd says that her son shot his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and killed himself over the paternity of his 3-month-old daughter, Zoey. The athlete's mother says the two had a huge argument over another NFL player possibly fathering their daughter.
The couple had gotten into an argument after Belcher's girlfriend, Kasandra M. Perkins came home late after a Trey Songz concert. Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd was there helping around the house after the birth of her granddaughter when she witnessed her son shoot Perkins. According to the New York Post, Shepherd called 911 as he fled the scene and went to the parking lot of the teams stadium where he shot himself in front of his coach and the general manager.
One source says that the blow out argument was his uncertainty of being the child's biological father "The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father." The source added, "She said he [believed he] wasn't necessarily the father of the child."
Perkins family taken Zoey to Texas for her mother's memorial last week. The Perkins' family will be involved in raising the 3-month-old, "We will raise Baby Zoey in the knowledge of the love from which she was born."
As for rumors of another man fathering baby Zoey, the Perkins family continued to defend their "loyal, honest and trusting" daughter without answering questions, "There has been a disheartening amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the tragic loss of our Kasi," the family statement said. "No one will every truly know why this happened, nor is there anything to be said that could justify or ease our pain."
Although, Zoey will be without a mother and father, the NFL has agreed to give her $1 million every year until she turns 18.
