HBO ‘Jinx’ Robert Durst Arrested: Creators Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling Talk “Strategic Killer”
Ever since HBO aired their much talked about docu-series The Jinx, which semi-profiled accused murderer/millionaire Robert Durst – who was later caught confessing to the murders he committed at the end of the series – the creators have been rather quiet. But now that he was arrested, both Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling are coming out to unveil just when they realized that Durst was guilty of murder and being a "strategic killer."
Per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, both Jarecki and Smerling admit that there was a time during filming of The Jinx that they both "feared for their safety."
Back in March, Durst was arrested in New Orleans – oddly enough on the night that the show's finale aired – and was accused of murder—largely dealing with the 2000 murder of Susan Berman. Now, the two minds behind the show admit that it's sort of been like being in the witness protection program since the show's finale aired...
"We built the series before anyone saw it," Jarecki said. "People think it's a joke to give Bob the benefit of the doubt. As soon as you hear that he chopped up his neighbor, nobody wants to hear the nuances of whether or not he killed his wife..."
Jarecki then tells THR that everything changed for him when they found the letter "in the same handwriting [as an anonymous letter alerting police to Berman's body]."
As far as their safety, the filmmaker notes that Durst "is not just a random killer. He's a strategic killer and won't put himself at risk unless he thinks there's an upside. I think we were doing what Bob wanted us to do."
