Helicopter Crash Kills 2 People In London: Collides With Crane And Slams Near Tain Station, 13 Injured [Video]
Two people are dead after a helicopter crashed onto a London street after hitting a construction crane. The pilot and one pedestrian were killed and 13 people are injured.
The helicopter crash south of the River Thames was near the underground and mainline train station at Vauxhill, according to the Associated Press. Paul Ferguson, an office worker near the scene, told BBC News, "There was a flash and the helicopter plunged to the ground. It exploded and you can imagine the smoke coming out of it."
Pedestrian Erin Rogers, who was waiting at a bus stop near the crash site told the Associated Press, she "heard a bang and saw bits of crane debris falling to the floor." She added, "Then the helicopter was in flames. The rest of the people at the bus station were looking on going 'What was that?"'
The crane sitting on a high rise apartment complex, the St. George's Wharf the employee in charge of operating the crane was not their because he was running late for work. Aviation authorities have issued warnings about the crane, that stood 770 feet above the ground.
Due to bad weather the pilot asked to land at Heathrow airport, "We received a request from Heathrow air traffic control to accept the helicopter, which had asked to be diverted due to bad weather," heliport added in the statement, "The London Heliport never gained contact with the helicopter."
