'Batgirl' & 'Gotham Academy' Vol. 2 Among DC Comics New Collections, Ongoing Collections 2016!
DC Entertainment has announed they are going to publish the first collections of all the new titles and new collections from fan-favorite series in 2016. The new series have added a lot of diversity and is meant to satisfy a wider group of readers. Check out some of the new collections, including Batgirl Vol.2 and Gotham Academy Vol.2!
Bat-Mite
When I heard Bat-Mite was getting his own miniseries, I was more than a little confused. Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown do not get an ongoing series but this Mr. Mxyzptlk knock-off does? I can barely stand him in the appearances he makes in other titles, I cannot possibly imagine an entire issue focused on him. Plus, the Bat-family titles are very serious and dark so how is this deranged imp supposed to fit in? It seems like this is DC's effort to bring in some more lighthearted and fun stories. I'm all for that, but maybe with a less annoying character.
Starfire Vol 1
Starfire's first appearance in the New 52 was met with controversy. According to Comic Vine, many fans were angered by the character's skimpy costume and nonchalance towards her past relationships. Now that Red Hood and the Outlaws has ended, DC is giving Kory a fresh, new start. She is still not the way she was in pre-boot continuity; a mixture of the naive, childlike Starfire portrayed in the Teen Titans cartoon and some of her character traits from previous canon. This volume may not please all of her fans, but it is an enjoyable story with great writing and art.
Batgirl Vol 2
The first volume of Batgirl had a lot of changes for the character, which the creators discussed in our exclusive interview! Barbara's adventures continue in this more lighthearted and updated setting. Though I am still getting used to a younger and less mature Barbara, the setting and supporting characters are a lot of fun.
Injustice Gods Among Us Year Four Vol 1
If you have been reading our new comic book day reviews, then you already know that I am a big fan of Injustice. Even though it is depressing watching so many of my favorite characters become evil or die, I can't stop reading. It is fascinating to see how one tragic event can completely change a person. Year Four has Superman's soldiers against the gods of Olympus, so it is full of exciting action.
Gotham Academy Vol 2
I think Gotham Academy is a great addition to DC. It brings some much needed diversity to the Batverse. The series has an interesting and mysterious setup, relatable characters, and awesome art. Check out our interview with the creative team!
