Google Restructuring Under Parent Holding Company Alphabet Inc.

Tech giant Google announced on Monday that they are restructuring their organization under Alphabet Inc., a parent holding company. Alphabet will be the new mother company of Google, controlling Google's other ventures like Google X and Calico.

This should cause users to worry too much about the news.  Essentially this means nothing for Google users in day-to-day use. The search engine, YouTube, Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Maps and Android will all remain the same (barring the usual updates and changes we're used to apps getting) and keep the same names.

Creating Alphabet is a business move to help Google keep up with the times and not fall behind like say, IBM or Nokia, according to the Guardian.

"We've long believed that over time companies tend to get comfortable doing the same thing, just making incremental changes," Larry Page, Google's CEO, wrote in the Alphabet announcement. "But in the technology industry, where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant."

Page said they named it "Alphabet" to represent language, "one of humanity's most important innovations," and as a play on words of "Alpha-bet," as in your best bet. Their new website is abc.xyz, which seems to point to the idea that it's an all-encompassing company that has everything you need from A to Z.

Guardian explained that this restructuring is a bit like Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway, which encapsulates other ventures but doesn't strongly control them, mixed with General Electric, which is a larger company owning other companies and still has a slight hand in how they're run.

Google isn't just the apps and websites you may regularly use - it's also a handful of research, tech and health companies. This includes Google X, which makes things like the self-driving car and is working on a drone delivery service.

 Other companies include Calico, a research company trying to help you live forever and a robotics group, which made a robotic dog that went viral.
