Jeb Bush Rally Ended After Black Lives Matter Protestors Start Chanting

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush abruptly ended his campaign rally in North Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday after Black Lives Matter activists interrupted and started chanting in protest.

A group of protestors came to his rally and started chanting "black lives matter." Bush did not give his regular closing remarks and spent an unusually short amount of time shaking hands and taking pictures with supporters before quickly leaving the scene.

Bush was asked about racial disparities in the criminal justice system, as we've seen with the spotlight in the last year on black men and women being killed by the police and dying in police custody.

Bush responded that "these problems have gotten worse in the last few years" and that communities "no longer trust the basic institutions in our society that they need to trust," according to CNN.

"No one should deny that [there's racism in America], although there's been significant progress," Bush said.

Bush also said that local leaders could help by reaching out and being directly involved with ignored communities.

After answering the question, Bush shook some hands and left the room. Protestors began chanting "black lives matter" as he was leaving. Some Bush supporters chanted "all lives matter" and "white lives matter," according to the Los Angeles Times. A protestors and a Bush supporter faced each other, each holding a middle finger in the other's face.

Before the event, according to Bush spokesperson Allie Brandenburger, Bush met with Black Lives Matter advocates and talked with them.

"Governor Bush's goal is to unite Americans, not divide them, and that begins with having open, candid conversations with all voters," Brandenburger said in a statement.

This is not the first time a campaign stop has been interrupted by the Black Lives Matter movement this year. Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley have also had rallies interestuped by protests.
