Lindsey Vonn Airlifted by Helicopter after Severe World Alpine Skiing Championships Crash [VIDEO]: Injured Right Knee, Condition Unknown
Reports confirm that U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn was airlifted by helicopter off the slopes of Schladming, Austria during the World Alpine Skiing Championships after a sever crash during her Super-G race. Vonn was transferred to a nearby hospital after losing balance during a jump and supposedly injuring her right knee. Her U.S. team had no further immediate information on her condition.
Vonn's crash took place on the first day of the championships (Tuesday, Feb. 5) during the Super-G race. The Olympic gold medalist apparently lost balance on her right leg while landing after a jump, ultimately injuring her right knee. The 28-year-old's ski immediately flew off, and she continued to slide off-course before hitting a gate and finally coming to a halt. Vonn was treated on the slopes for 12 minutes before being airlifted to the hospital. The race then restarted after a 15-minute delay.
According to several reports, Schladming was hit with bad weather all weekend. The championship was initially delayed 3.5 hours on Tuesday due to fog. Vonn stated in a column for the Denver Post on Monday: "It snowed a lot Sunday night, there was no training possible Monday on the race hill, then it rained most of Monday afternoon and evening. I know they're going to try really hard to get the race off Tuesday."
Before the crash, Vonn (a four-time overall World Cup champion) was trailing race leader Tina Maze of Slovenia by approximately 0.12 seconds. Maze went on to win the race in 1 minute and 35.39 seconds, beating Lara Gut of Switzerland by 0.38 seconds and Julia Mancuso of the United States by 0.52 seconds.
Vonn is currently rumored to be in a relationship with pro-golfer Tiger Woods, read more on that here.
Few other details surrounding Vonn's current injury condition have yet to be released.
