David Matusiewicz has been identified as the gunman in today's Wilmington, Delaware, courthouse shooting that left 2 people wounded and 3 people, including Matusiewitcz, dead. The gunman entered the New Castle County Courthouse at 8:00 a.m. this morning and opened fire, injuring 2 Capitol Police officers, who were saved by their bulletproof vests, and killing his ex-wife and another woman. Matusiewicz, a former optometrist, was in a long and grueling custody battle with his ex-wife. In 2007, he kidnapped his 3 daughters and took them to Nicaragua for 19 months, resulting in a 4-year sentence in federal prison.

During the shootout, police closed surrounding streets as schools went into lockdown and courthouse visitors and employees searched out cover inside. Irvin Neal, who was on his way into the courthouse this morning, tells his account of the incident:

"I saw the gentleman and a bunch of ladies and people running out of the court building and I just hear all the bam, bam, bam, so I ran too. And the gentleman that passed me told me not to go in there. And he told me that the shooter pointed the gun at him, passed him by and shot everybody else."

Matusiewicz was due in court this morning for a child custody hearing with his ex-wife. His kidnapping conviction in 2009 ensured a poor outcome for him in today's hearing. When he was stopped at the metal detector upon entering the building, he shot the 2 officers on duty. According to a state police spokesperson, he did not make it past that point but still managed to shoot and kill his ex-wife and 1 other woman. It is not clear whether or not police killed Matusiewicz or if he took his own life.

Though the 45-year-old gunman is dead, the investigation continues. Police believe he acted alone but they are still checking each room of the 12-story building to make sure everyone is safe. Search dogs have been brought onto the scene to go through nearby buildings. Investigators are also interviewing people who were inside the building during the incident. Delaware Governor, Jack Markell, was not on the scene, but released this official statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers right now are with the victims of this senseless violence and the Capitol police officers who put their lives on the line to protect the courts and public every day."
