Clara Oswald, the Impossible Girl, will no longer be The Doctor's companion on Doctor Who. According to The Mirror, Coleman will take on the role of Queen Victoria in a new drama series from ITV. When we previously reported on the rumors of Coleman's departure, sources claimed that she would make an official announcement ahead of the Sept. 19 premiere of season nine. It turns out that she did.
"I have left the Tardis - it's happened. I've filmed my last scenes," she told BBC Radio 1, according to io9. "It's been in the works for a very long time. Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a year and a half ago and tried to work out the best place to do it and tell a really good story. We're not going to give any details but it will happen at some point this season... We worked out a really good story arc out so hopefully people will love it."
If it's happening "at some point this season," we might be in for a surprise from Moffat. Though it's likely she'll stick around for the entire season, a mid-season departure would be more interesting. Before you suggest "Clara dies" in season nine, though, consider how other companions have left the Doctor in the past. We're in for an emotional ride.
