Colbert, Trump Interview on ‘Late Show’: Dodges President Obama Birth Certificate Question
Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night to promote his campaign. What actually happened was he became the whipping post for Colbert and his crew throughout the entire episode—even during his interview. Of course, as most of us loved it – yet we were hoping for more of a "hard" interview, if we're be honest – what we were perhaps most surprised about was the fact that Trump played ball... for the most part. When it came to addressing his views on President Barack Obama's birth certificate, well, he just dodged the question.
Before getting to his question on Obama's birth certificate, Colbert played a game with Trump in which he read a quote aloud and the former Celebrity Apprentice star had to guess whether he said them or the host's old Colbert Report character did.
"For years I play an over the top, like, conservative, you know, character," Colbert said, adding, "...not as long as you did, but I did for many years."
He further expressed, "I was looking back over some of the things you've said over the years and sometimes I couldn't figure out whether I said them or you said them."
Here's the segment:
As the interview was winding down, the Late Show host added that he had one last question, and if Trump answered it he would never have to do so again. He then gave him a "meatball" of a question, asking, "Barack Obama: born in the United States?"
And, sadly, Trump let it hit the ground.
"I was ready for this. You know, I don't talk about it anymore. I talk about jobs; I talk about our veterans being horribly treated. I just don't discuss that anymore."
