WWE's Nikki Bella Talks Divas Championship Record, AJ Lee, John Cena, Social Media Hate
Nikki Bella lost her WWE Divas Championship to Charlotte at Night of Champions two weeks ago to end her record title reign at 301 consecutive days. In a recent interview, Bella talks about breaking AJ Lee's record, her relationship with John Cena, and social media hate.
Many fans believed that Nikki Bella broke AJ Lee's record because they wanted to not have her in the record books for two reasons. First, she is no longer with the company, and second, she is the wife of CM Punk, who famously left the company in early 2014.
If that weren't enough, reports then emerged that John Cena used his power backstage to ensure that Nikki held onto the title even though there were plans in place to put the belt on Charlotte earlier into Nikki's reign. All of this led to some hate on social media for the Bella twin, but in an interview with Channel Guide Magazine, the former champion cleared the air.
"I ignore it," she said. "Even though I see the hate on social media, and it shocks me. It shocks me the rumors people start, that I have the title because of my boyfriend. If that was the case I would have gotten the title when I came back years ago and still had the title. He has nothing to do with it. He has nothing to do with anyone's story or anything like that. He has zero pull. We talk about it all the time because it's funny how people say that."
Nikki went on to talk about what she believes is the genesis of the social media hate.
"I think where it started was for a year AJ had a voice on WWE TV and all of us on Total Divas didn't," she said. "Then Vince [McMahon] didn't want the title on any Total Divas member because he didn't know how it would transition on Sunday night and Monday in case there was a title change and the show was airing."
