‘Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder Talks Season 7: Returning To Basics

The Vampire Diaries may be missing Elena Gilbert this season, but Ian Somerhalder shares that Season 7 will make up for the loss. In an interview, Somerhalder expressed his interest in returning back to the basics of the show.

"There's not going to be ten doppelgängers and all these magic spells," the actor said. "I want to get away from that. I want to get back to the human elements that made people love this show."

Somerhalder's interest in returning to the show's original plot that first attracted its viewers is in no way a hint that he will be leaving the show anytime soon. With Elena's absence, there is plenty of storyline that will propel characters' paths forward.

"There's still a lot of elements of [the show that was]," said Somerhalder. "We know that she's there, and there's still very much the presence of Elena. This is Mystic Falls without her. I think people are going to like it. This is the evolution of this story. And it's a lot of fun. There's a lot of great interaction with the brothers; there's a lot happening."

We'll also get to see Somerhalder's character, Damon, keep himself busy with a new choice of ladies. He even had his input in designing Damon's new bed.

"I said, 'As long as he can fit up to eight sorority girls, then that's how big we should make the bed.' That's Damon Salvatore, you know what I mean? He's not married," Somerhalder stated. 

Damon's brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley), will also evolve this season and explore his good-guy feelings that he left once behind in past seasons. TVD's Co-Creator Julie Plec shared that Stefan's better suited as the guy that can be counted on.

"I love hero Stefan. I love when Stefan is the guy trying to do the right thing and be strong and make people feel better and rescue the kitten from the tree," she explained.

As many TVD fans know, Stefan's good intentions do not always happen without a setback here or there. Plec shared that there is still room for Stefan to get into trouble again.
