CW's 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Premiere: Musical Comedy Pokes Fun At Romance
CW's new take on a musical comedy, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, premiered Monday and proves to be a show that challenges the preconceived expectations about modern day romance, and a woman's need to have it all. The show's lead Rebecca Bunch, played by co-creator and YouTube star Rachel Bloom, is completely clueless at life and hasn't felt happiness since a summer camp love affair with handsome jock Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III).
In the first episode, viewers see Rebecca's relationship with Josh end abruptly like most summer flings do, which leaves her yearning for romantic conquests, roughly based on her favorite movies. Rebecca chooses to follow her mother's wishes however, and pursues an academic career that fast tracks her to becoming a law partner nearly a decade after her breakup.
After a random run-in with Josh on the street, Rebecca believes that she needs to take a leap of faith and start fresh in her life with the help of Josh. She turns down a fabulous job promotion, sends her medication down the drain, abandons her job and follows an unsuspecting Josh to West Covina, California, his hometown that he has just decided to return to before running in to Rebecca.
The show's creative twist on girl meets boy and gives everything up for him is its musical numbers that poke fun at life expectations based on popular romantic comedies. Rachel Bloom's character breaks out into song about the wonderful town of West Covina and later belts out the hilarious tune "Sexy Getting Ready Song" while preparing for a night out and planned run-in with Josh.
Viewers fall for the both lovable and zany character whose hopeless romantic drive makes her antics understood instead of borderline stalking. Co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna's (Devil Wears Prada) outlook and Bloom's new musical comedy may be just what fall television needs.
"I'm going to sound like my father right now," Bloom said in a recent interview, "but TV started with people doing their old vaudeville acts. And think of the success of Lonely Island. And all of the YouTube video-parody channels. And Epic Rap Battle. I think people like musicals. And when done with a modern comedic sensibility, musical comedy can be the most efficient delivery of both storytelling and jokes."
