Andy Samberg Engaged to Joanna Newsom: SNL Alumnus Popped the Question to Singer-songwriter Girlfriend After 5 Years of Dating
Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom have officially announced that they are indeed engaged to be married. The 34-year-old funny man met the 31-year-old singer-songwriter 5 years ago and the two have been dating ever since. This past Saturday, Samberg hosted the Independent Spirit Awards and Joanna was seen sporting the new engagement ring. Samberg was actually quite the fan of Newsom's, attending many of her concerts before being set up with her by a mutual friend. We all know that Andy is also a songwriter in the parody realm, and it turns out that Joanna is proud of her man's humorous numbers. A representative for the Saturday Night Live alumnus broke the news of the engagement to Us Weekly yesterday.
A lot of people might not even be aware that Andy Samberg was dating probably the most successful harpist today. That is because the couple were very adamant about keeping their private life out of the spotlight, only going to special events together and staying in instead of partying all night long. They have lasted 5 years with this process, so maybe other entertainers should take some cues from them.
Joanna Newsom is arguably one of the most talented musicians around today. She has a very unique style of vocal inflection, performs most of her songs on the harp, can also play the piano and harpsichord, and pretty much any other instrument. Plus, she usually performs in concert halls to sold-out crowds, so that is clearly saying a lot, too. Newsom also guest starred on the sketch comedy show "Portlandia" which let her try her hand at her soon-to-be husband's trade. She even brought along her harp for the sketch.
Andy Samberg is part of the trio (The Lonely Island) responsible for bringing Saturday Night Live out of a ratings rut. His first year as a cast member, the "Digital Short" segment was introduced and it completely took over. Each week viewers were waiting to see what the next song or short would be. Samberg left SNL last season to focus on his movie and musical careers. Many celebrities that he had involved in these shorts have now become close friends of his. One of them, Justin Timberlake, recently got married to Jessica Biel, so maybe Samberg "caught the bug" and decided to propose to Newsom. From the looks of it, though, it just seems like the best thing to do for the couple. They are a rare entertainment couple that have kept out of the headlines and are clearly just focused on the relationship. Congratulations, you guys!
