'Arrow' Season 4 [SPOILERS]: John Barrowman Teases Malcolm Merlyn's Ties to Damien Darhk
The latest episode of Season 4 of Arrow brought Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and Thea Queen (Willa Holland) to Nanda Parbat to see the latter's father, Malcolm Merlyn. In a new interview, John Barrowman drops an interesting tease about his character's ties to Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough).
In the latest episode, Malcolm told Thea that she will always suffer from the bloodlust she now feels after her resurrection in the Lazarus Pit until she kills the person responsible. Unfortunately, the former Ra's al Ghul (Matt Nable) is already dead. So Malcolm, the new Ra's, sent two members of his League of Assassins to their deaths at her hand in order to sate that desire.
For this reason, he did not want to use the pit to bring Laurel's sister, Sara (Caity Lotz) back to life, but he eventually relented. He warned, however, that there would be consequences.
In a brief interview with the "Spoiler Room" column at Entertainment Weekly, Barrowman talks about this plot point, but in doing so he drops an intriguing tease about Damien Darhk.
"Does what Malcolm said on Arrow mean Sara has to kill Thea? — Hillary
Scary, right? But, to be fair, Malcolm was the mastermind behind her death. “He’s not afraid of her because, in his mind, he killed her once, he can kill her again,” John Barrowman says. “But he doesn’t know what she’s come out of the pit with. Everybody comes out of the pit different. People come out with a bit of every soul that has been put in the pit before. Some parts of those souls take over. Thea’s got a bloodlust. Damien Darhk’s got something else. What will Sara come out with?” We all caught that Darhk mention, right? Okay, good."
So it's clear that Damien used the pit, possibly more than once, which would explain his character's gleeful psychosis. And based on Barrowman's comment, it's possible Malcolm knows more about Damien than we'd think. Could there be a shared history between the two men?
