Aamir Khan Not Planning a Sequel to His Academy Award Nominee Film ‘Lagaan’
It was earlier reported that Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is working on the sequel to his Academy Award nominee film Lagaan. However, current reports are making it clear that it was just a rumor.
It was earlier reported that after completing his current projects, Aamir Khan would start to work on Lagaan 2. According to Mid-Day, it was reported by some source that Khan was looking for new director to helm the sequel to Lagaan. "Aamir is planning a sequel and has also met a few people for collaboration. The sequel, like the original film, will be based on the land tax (lagaan) system, but with a contemporary backdrop to it. The script is still being developed and pre-production work is yet to start," source added.
According to NDTV, a source close to Khan said that he is not working on the Lagaan's sequel. "It is completely false news (Aamir working on the sequel). It is not true at all," sources said.
According to Hindustan Times, Khan is not involved with Lagaan 2 but there are strong chances that if director Ashutosh Gowariker works on the sequel then Rock On! star Prachi Desai will play the role of a leading lady.
In 2001, Bollywood filmmaker Gowariker wrote the story of Lagaan, which was a period drama story on a small village whose inhabitants were oppressed by high taxes. The inhabitants find themselves in a strange situation when one British officer challenges them to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid all the taxes. Bollywood star Khan was so moved with the story that he not only agreed to play the main lead of Bhuvan but also agreed to produce the mega budget film. The film went on to win many accolades including Indian National Film Award for best film, Portland International Film Award for best film, Bergen International Jury's Award, American Choreography Award for outstanding achievement in feature film and an Academy Award nomination for best foreign film.
The 49-year-old Khan is currently working on his upcoming film, Dangal, in which the actor will play the role of famous Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat.
