Lauren Silberman, NFL's First Female Kicker Try Out Cut Short by Injury After Only Two Kicks [VIDEO]
Lauren Silberman, the first female kicker to try out for the National Football League, has had her hopeful journey cut short by an injury after just two kicks in a regional combine. The 28-year-old's goal was to shake up the status quo as a prospective football kicker at a high level. Unfortunately she suffered a quadriceps injury on the New York Jets' practice field and was unable to continue her try out. Her first kick travelled 19 yards and was the cause of the injury. She managed to get a second kick in, which went 13 yards, then had to call it quits.
The 28-year-old Silberman is a graduate student at MIT and an ex-club soccer player in Wisconsin. She had never kicked in a competitive football game before, but managed to make the cut at this regional combine based on her general athletic capability. After the try out, Lauren fielded questions from over 20 media outlets and stated: ''They certainly didn't go as far as they were in practices but I tried to work through the pain.'' Silberman received an "incomplete" grade for her performance [VIDEO HERE].
In a statement regarding the hype over Lauren Silberman's acceptance to try out for the NFL, Stephen Austin, NFL's director of regional combines said, ''Our job is to evaluate talent and not leave any stone unturned. We want young, athletic people who have played a sport, typically in college or military or small schools ... Until they get here, we don't have any idea of what they're really going to turn out to do and how they're going to perform."
Mstarz previously reported on this story, saying:
[T]he kicking prospect will attend the scouting combine with other college players in New Jersey for the first round and if placed amongst the best she will head to the super-regional held in April in Dallas.
Lauren Silberman will attend the combine knowing that her chances are slim, but is honored and hope that more women will also follow her lead, "I was not aware that I was the first female registrant," Silberman said according to NFL.com. Silberman hasn't officially kicked a football, but has played club soccer for University of Wisconsin.
The female kicker added, "I was actually hoping that the 2012 historical milestone rule, to allow women to play, would prompt more women to attend tryouts this year. But for me, what's important is to finally have a chance to fulfill my dreams by trying out to play in the world's most competitive football league."
