Stolen Yacht Washes Ashore At Pacifica, Alleged Thieves Captured after Pizza and Beer Pit-Stop [VIDEO]

While watching television news reports of a luxury yacht that had run aground in Pacifica, Calif., John Fruth noticed something peculiar. The 82-foot yacht washing ashore appeared to be his boat, "Darlin'."

The sailing vessel was fighting waves off of a popular surf spot south of San Francisco. The boat got stuck in shallow water as the tide rolled out. Police and Coast Guard radioed the Darlin’ several times but those onboard denied that they needed assistance and refused their offer for help, that was until Fruth called them and let them in on a little secret. Namely, that he knew nothing of the vessel’s spontaneous 20-mile journey from his Sausalito dock.

He was seeing the news media coverage of a vessel that had run aground," Sausalito police Sergeant Bill Fraass told the Associated Press. "The individuals did not want assistance from the Coast Guard but were stuck on a vessel that could go nowhere."

Deputies on jet skis, a helicopter and a Coast Guard vessel closed in on the apparently pilfered ship and arrested its three occupants-Leslie Gardner, Dario Mira and Lisa Modawell- on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, it appears that the alleged thieves were planning a much longer trip. Authorities found the $4 million vessel stocked with pizza and beer.

"We do have thefts of vessels throughout the area, but the theft of a vessel of this size is uncommon," Fraass said.

The ultra-conspicuous Darlin’ boasts a bright blue hull and three staterooms. According to Reuters, Fruth charters the boat for $5,000 a day.
