Will Smith Talks why he Rejected Role in Django Unchained
Almost three years later its release, we are finally discovering why Will Smith turned down the lead role in the huge Oscar hit Django Unchained.
Smith is arguably one of the greatest actors in the Hollywood circuit. Everything he touches simply turns to gold. You can't forget about Hitch, the Men In Black installments, Bad Boys (1 and 2) and the list goes on. In fact, if you start naming your favorite movies, Smith is probably starring at least one of them.
According to Independent UK, Smith decided not to take the role because he failed to see eye to eye with the film's director, Quentin Tarantino.
Smith was recently speaking at The Hollywood Reporter's annual actor roundtable, where he gave his perspective on the difficulties with the role. He explained that although he felt that the story was perfect, he wanted it to be a love story.
"I wanted to make the greatest love story that African Americans had ever seen," he said. "We talked, we met, we sat for hours and hours about it. I wanted to make that movie so badly, but I felt the only way was, it had to be a love story, not a vengeance story."
Tarantino, who is no stranger to violence in his films (such as Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Sin City) couldn't come to an agreement about the direction of the film with Smith. The two decided to go their separate ways creatively. Instead, Tarantino increased the level of violence in the film, Jamie Foxx ended up nabbing the role and Smith moved on to a new project: Men in Black.
Smith also stated that he passed up the role because Christoph Waltz's bounty hunter would steal his thunder. After the movie grossed over $400 million globally, however, Smith would agree that the film was amazing but simply not for him.
