Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration to Include Thousands of Fans, Official Stamps, New Website
Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction serial in television history, is set to celebrate 50 years on the airwaves. And the BBC is not letting the half-century mark pass lightly.
A giant celebration projected to bring in over 15,000 Whovians is set for November 22, 1 day before the show celebrates its 50th anniversary. The massive party will be held at London's ExCel Centre and stars of the series are expected to be on hand.
"We cannot wait to welcome Doctor Who fans from around the world to London in November. It's going to be a spectacular weekend," Amanda Hill of BBC Worldwide said.
Prior to the Who-centric fete, however a number of commemorations of the Doctor's Golden Anniversary are set to commence. The Royal Mail is due to release 11 stamps later this month, presumably one for each Doctor.
(William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith, if you're wondering.)
"2013 is an opportunity for fans around the world to come together and celebrate the glorious past, present and future of Doctor Who," said Hill.
Harlequin Goldsmiths have created silver and gold collectible statues and men's and women's jewelry for collectors. The BBC has rolled out a new website- doctorwho.tv- that provides tidbits about each doctor and other trivia to help celebrate the upcoming anniversary.
The second half of season (ahem, series) 7 will begin airing this month before going on a long hiatus, that will end with the debut of the 3D 50th Anniversary Special. After that will come a docudrama called An Adventure In Space and Time. Of course, fans can expect a Christmas special on Dec. 25th same as always.
