SXSW 2013: Music Buffs, Film Aficionados, Techies Flock To Austin for South by Southwest Festival
Hopeful tech startups, venture capitalists, movie lovers and plain ol' live music fans are all descending on Austin, Tex. for the annual madcap dash of events that is South by Southwest.
The 27th iteration of the event begins Friday with the SXSW Interactive Festival a five day showcase of up-and-coming tech and game companies that serves as a make or break moment for many fledgling techies.
Prior to its integration into all iPhones, Siri was a voice recognition app that garnered the top prize for innovative web technology, the Accelerator in 2010. Apple snapped up the rights to the technology soon thereafter.
At the same time, the nine-day long SXSW International Film Festival launches. It's first film is set to be the Steve Carrell-Jim Carrey vehicle "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." Over 250 shorts, documentaries, comedies dramas and other films will play at the festival. A large number of the movies screened will be world premieres.
After the Film and Tech conferences comes an insane amount of live performances that start on Tuesday. Over 1,300 live acts perform at area venues over the course of five days. Kendrick Lamar, Green Day, and viral hitmaker Baauer are all slated to perform over the mad dash that swallows the Texas Capital whole year after year.
Much in the same way that tech companies can become household names via a good showing at SXSW, aspiring artists can kickstart a career by impressing the masses of Austin. Wiz Khalifa and A$AP Rocky (whose 2012 show with his posse, the A$AP mob, ended in a brawl) both got thier respetive major label career starts by putting on buzzworthy shows at SXSW.
What do you think? Will any tech of the future come out of this year's SXSW? What about music? Any buzzy bands that you think will impress at SXSW?
