Filibuster News: Marco Rubio Quotes Wiz Khalifa, Jay Z During Rand Paul Filibuster of John Brennan [VIDEO]
It's not often politics and hip-hop come together like they did Wednesday night March 6. It also isn't often people get to witness a filibuster as lengthy as Senator Rand Paul's nearly 13 hour filibuster of John Breenan's nomination to be CIA director. What really made this filibuster epic was when Senator Marco Rubio used his time at the microphone to help continue the filibuster and quote rappers Wiz Khalifa and Jay Z.
For those who aren't familiar with a filibuster, it's basically when a politician will just keep talking at the microphone in order to delay a vote on a given proposal. So Kentucky's Republican Senator Rand Paul did just this week with the help of various other politicians. Rubio took his turn stepping up to the microphone and used that time to quote some of the country's most respected rappers. During a filibuster it's often hard to find things to keep talking about, hence Rubio quoting hip-hop artists.
"Let me begin by quoting a modern day poet, his name is Wiz Khalifa. He has a song called 'Work Hard Play Hard,'" said Rubio, as some fellow senators chuckled. "You look at the time - I think it's a time when many of our colleagues expected to be home, back in the home state playing hard, but I'm happy we're here still working hard on this issue."
Rubio continued, "That takes me back to another modern day poet by the name of Jay-Z. One of the songs that he wrote, 'It's funny when seven days can change, it was all good just a week ago.' Well, I don't know if it was all good a week ago, but I can tell you that things have really changed. Because if the president was George W. Bush and this was a question being asked of him and his response was the silence we've gotten, we'd have a very different scenario here tonight."
Rand Paul ended up concluding the filibuster early Thursday morning (March 7) after nearly 13 hours. Paul's filibuster is said to be one of the longest in U.S. history. The late Rep. Strom Thurmond holds the record for the longest filibuster at more than 24 hours.
We will save you from having to watch the entire filibuster, instead check out two minutes of Marco Rubio quoting Wiz Khalifa and Jay Z.
