Golden Globe Nods: Johnny Depp Left Out, Will Smith Moves In & More

The nominations for January's Golden Globes are in, and just like yesterday's SAG nominations, there's much to discuss. Let's see who got shown a little love (Will Smith!) and who got left out (Johnny Depp?!) in this year's film categories.

Snubs

One of the major snubs comes by way of Brooklyn, which opened to rave reviews across the board for its simple, poignant tale of a young Irish girl adjusting to life in America and figuring out what home means to her. The only nomination for the film went to Saoirse Ronan for best actress in a motion picture, drama. No love was shown for the film itself (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went with Mad Max: Fury Road instead), director John Crowley or for screenplay writer Nick Hornby.

Another big snub is Johnny Depp for his turn in Black Mass. Depp was nominated for the SAG for best actor, but not here. Depp isn't the only one, as 9-year-old Jacob Tremblay (Room) was left off the best supporting actor list but made the cut at the SAG awards. Ditto for Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, who many expected to be nominated for their critically acclaimed film, Spotlight.

Instead, Ruffalo was nominated for best actor in a motion picture, comedy, for his role in Infinitely Polar Bear. This one even had Ruffalo shocked, as he tweeted this morning, "No way! Best actor nom for #InfinitelyPolarBear!!!"

Charlotte Rampling, despite gaining some key wins in critics' awards, was also ousted for her role in 45 Years.

Surprises

The Martian made headlines a few weeks back when the HFPA threw it into the "musical or comedy" category. The move paid off for the film, though, as it got some very key nominations here despite getting no recognition at the SAGs. The film was nominated for best actor in a comedy (Matt Damon), best director (Ridley Scott), and best picture in the comedy section.

One of the biggest surprises from the SAG nominations was that oft-nominated Jennifer Lawrence was not nominated for her role in Joy. The Golden Globes fixed that, however, by giving her a nod in the best actress in a comedy category.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of all was Will Smith getting a nod for best actor for Concussion. Smith presumably beat out Johnny Depp for the spot in a very crowded category that most did not see him bursting into.

To see who ends up taking home the Globes, tune in on January 10.
