Serena Williams’ 5K Charity Fun Run: Tennis Star Finishes Miami Race in a Taxi Cab?
Serena Williams was recently caught getting out of a taxi cab to finish her 5K charity fun run, Live Ultimate, in Miami, according to the New York Post. As rumor has it, this could be the result of a struggling knee and elbow surgery which caused her to end her 2015 campaign prematurely. Her sister, Venus Williams, was there for support and to participate in the action.
Daily Mail reports, "She was forced to withdraw from her final two big tournaments, saying she needed time to heal from the physical injuries and the disappointment of losing out in her bid for the Grand Slam."
The publication reports she pulled out of the China Open in Beijing and the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore around the same time.
After returning, she posted a video stating, "I didn't run the whole way this year, but next year I will." She can be heard cheering on fans and her sister. Venus can be seen in the video singing and wearing a gold medal with Serena.
The Daily Mail reports, "The 34-year-old top athlete was wearing an orange Nike t-shirt, black leggings and sneakers for the run but added a touch of her signature style with sparkling earrings and matching rings." Additionally, the NY Post claims, "Some 3,000 runners took part in the event, which goes along Ocean Drive and into the Art Deco suburb of Miami Beach."
The Ultimate Run was open to the public and included three events: a children's event, the 5K and a quarter-marathon which had a walk up entrance fee of $60. The money raised reportedly went to the Serena Williams Fund.
"In the past the foundation has helped build schools in Africa, fund colleges scholarships in New York and supported efforts to tackle the gun problems on America's streets," Daily Mail reports.
Ready to see Serena back in action on the tennis court? The tennis star will defend her Australian Open title later this month and will begin her 2016 season at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia, on January 3.
