Quentin Tarantino: "Guilty Pleasure" is Rom-Coms; Plus, Which One Makes Him Cry?
Chalk this one up to the (short) list of things we never thought we'd hear Quentin Tarantino say: he likes romantic comedies! The famously quirky director of the upcoming film The Hateful Eight sat down with Stephen Colbert to talk his "guilty pleasure," which film makes him cry, and more.
Tarantino stopped by The Late Show Tuesday evening to promote his new film, and somehow got on the topic of rom-coms. In a new clip released from the show, Tarantino tells Colbert, "Rom-coms are a guilty pleasure of mine. Especially on airplanes. Kate Hudson is the queen of the skies as far as I'm concerned."
Tarantino goes on to say that he thinks it has something to do with being in the air that makes him "more emotional." He continues, "I have found myself crying - just literally weeping - at the embarrassing confession movies." Specifically, he caught himself crying during 2009's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.
He then details the plot for Colbert. McConaughey plays a fashion photographer who is popular with all the ladies, but is thrust back into feelings for his first love, played by Garner, when both return home for a wedding. He's forced to deal with his feelings and issues as he is visited by the ghosts of his past girlfriends.
Detailing the scene that choked him up, Tarantino says, "He's known her for a while. Then it goes to a flashback when they knew each other when they were children. They're at a swing, and it's snowing in a park. She gives him a birthday gift, and he opens it up and it's a camera. It's actually the first camera I was ever given when I was a kid. And all of a sudden, I just start crying."
Tarantino says he doesn't mind crying during romantic comedies, though. "I might be embarrassed mentioning it but at that moment I was having a good time."
