VH1 Drops "The Breaks" Trailer With Tristan Wilds [WATCH]
VH1 has released the super trailer its original hip-hop movie The Breaks, starring Mack Wilds and Wood Harris, which is iset to premiere at the top of 2016.
The Breaks is set in New York City in the 1990s and chronicles the journey of three young friends who have created a bond based off of their love for rap music. The film is inspired and somewhat adapted from journalist Dan Charnas' book The Big Payback.
Wilds plays DeeVee, an aspiring producer looking for the next big rapper. Afton Williamson plays Nikki Jones, a George Washington graduate looking to make her mark in the hip-hop. David Call is David Aaron, Nikki's boyfriend and son of legendary producer Juggy Aaron.
"The film will travel viewers back to the summer of 1990 in New York City where the music industry's artists and hustlers intersect in the dance clubs and the street corners of the still crime-ridden city," VH1 says. "But they will all soon discover lives can be broken as fast as legends can be born."
The Wire's Harris will play Barry Fouray, who is depicted as the founder of a legendary hip-hop company. Harris told Page Six that "it was a mixture of Damon Dash and Puffy that inspired my role."
Harris understands the movie is set in the '90s, but he had a few choice words about the state of hip-hop today. "It's hard to be real and profitable at the same time. The money is made by fewer people now. All of the money is going to Drake, Future ... maybe Kendrick Lamar, and a little bit to J. Cole. After that, there's not much left. The pie is not getting sliced like that after they take their share," he told Page Six.
Hopefully this movie will show 1990s hip-hop in its truest form.
The Breaks will air on VH1 on Monday, January 4 at 9 p.m.
