Simon Pegg "Didn't Love" 'Star Trek Beyond' Trailer, Says There is Much "More To The Film"

If you were one of the many people underwhelmed by the first Star Trek Beyond trailer earlier this week, you're not alone. Screenwriter and star of the film, Simon Pegg, told HeyUGuys at the European premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens that he "didn't love" the new trailer either and that there is much "more to the film" than that.

The first trailer for the film felt a lot like a Fast and Furious trailer, which is not surprising considering that Justin Lin (who directed several Fast films) is at the helm of the third Star Trek film. J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two in the mega reboot, opted to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens instead of reprising his role as director, although he stayed on as a producer.
The trailer depicts the film as action-packed and humorous, and doesn't focus much on the plot of the film at all. Some fans are complaining that it didn't have enough of a Star Trek feel, and comments on the YouTube page for the trailer are highly negative in general.

Apparently Pegg took notice, too. "It was very action-packed. It was surprising. I kind of find it to be the marketing people sorta saying, 'Everybody come and see this film, it's full of action and fun,' when there's a lot more to it than that," he said.

According to Pegg, fans that are concerned about the lack of depth to the film or the level of "Star Trek-ness" shouldn't worry too much about the trailer. He said, "I didn't love it because I know there's a lot more to the film."

This is the first time Pegg has tagged on as writer for the franchise. Roberto Orci, John D. Payne and Patrick McKay, all of whom wrote the first two films, are also credited for the screenplay.

In the interview, Pegg also discusses his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opens in theaters everywhere Friday.
