Peter Murphy Arrested: Bauhaus Lead Singer Booked For DUI, Hit-and-Run, Meth Possession
Former Bauhaus lead singer Peter Murphy was arrested on Saturday for DUI, suspicion of hit-and-run and possession of meth.
Murphy, who was driving a Subaru Forester, allegedly rear-ended a Mercedes around noon in Glendale, Calif. According to reports, Murphy fled to Los Angeles but was followed by an eyewitness. The witness eventually blocked Murphy's car, trapping him until Los Angeles Police arrived.
The LAPD officers held Murray until Glendale police could make it to the scene.
Glendale officers say that Murphy appeared disoriented and had trouble recalling the day and time. Murphy denied ingesting any alcohol and blamed his confused nature on jet-lag from a recent flight.
Officers found a small bag of methamphetamine within the LAPD patrol car in which Murphy was detained. Murphy denied the bag belonged to him but officers think that the goth rocker was attempting to discard evidence in the car.
Murphy's charges include suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony hit-and-run and possessing methamphetamine.
Murphy is British but lives in Turkey. His bail was set at $500,000 because officials believe Murphy may be a flight risk.
Murphy helped form Goth Rock pioneers Bauhaus in 1978. The band released famous songs like "Bela Legosi's Dead" and "Kick in the Eye" before disbanding in 1983. Murphy has recorded several solo albums since and helped form the band Dalis Car.
Murphy had recently announced a massive world tour to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Bauhaus where he would play material by the band exclusively. No word yet if the tour will still go on.
