WWE is already dealing with a rash of injuries, and now they can add top star John Cena to that list, as the 15-time world champion is having shoulder surgery and will likely miss WrestleMania 32. How does this affect plans for the marquee event? There are spoilers below, so be warned.
PWInsider, Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and Bryan Alvarez all reported that Cena had been injured, and the man himself later confirmed it with this tweet on Wednesday night. WWE.com subsequently confirmed the story.
"Rather upside down start to 2016 as tomorrow I will head to Birmingham for shoulder surgery. Life's full of set backs but #nevergiveup"
In case you were unaware, Birmingham is the location of famous surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who has worked on professional athletes for years.
This is not good news for WWE, who just got Cena back from some much-needed and much-deserved time off. Let's take a look at the significant members of the roster who are injured or gone:
Seth Rollins: Injured knee, had to vacate WWE World Heavyweight Championship
John Cena: Shoulder injury
Daniel Bryan: Concussion and neck issues, WWE doctors have yet to clear him to return to in-ring action
Randy Orton: Shoulder injury
Sting: Injured in September at Night of Champions and is 56 years old
Cesaro: Shoulder injury
Nikki Bella: Neck injury
Paige: Reportedly dealing with an injury
CM Punk: In exile
Undertaker: Status for WrestleMania unclear
That's a lot of star power to be missing from the roster headed into WWE's most important season of the year. Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, and Bray Wyatt are arguably the biggest acts they have going full-time, with Brock Lesnar as the special attraction.
So now what do they do?
If the rumors that the New Japan Pro Wrestling stars are headed to WWE is true, that would help. Or maybe NXT unloads a bunch of people to the main roster. Either way, it will be an interesting road to WrestleMania.
