Making a Murderer has only been on Netflix for about three weeks, but already a follow-up to the docu-series is underway. Front Page: The Steven Avery Story will air later in January as a part of Investigation Discovery's Front Page series. ID is partnering with NBC News' Peacock Productions on the special, hosted by NBC correspondent Keith Morrison, which is promising to "provide viewers with critical details surrounding the case" and is reported to contradict the Netflix series.
The case in question is the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man incorrectly jailed for 18 years for a sexual assault he did not commit (DNA evidence exonerating him ultimately led to his release), is currently serving a life sentence for Halbach's murder. His nephew Brendan Dassey is also in jail for the crime.
The Netflix series, created by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, ultimately questions Avery's arrest and conviction, and attempts to provide ample evidence proving his innocence by following the defense's claims that Avery was framed by law enforcement.
The series has spawned petitions to free the men, with fans basing their anger on the evidence presented in Making a Murderer. Critics, including former prosecutor Ken Kratz, say that the series withheld key information about the case, something that the ID special hopes to address.
"As the country's most experienced true crime network, we feel compelled to address some critical details missing from the case as presented in the Netflix documentary," said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, of the project.
Front Page specializes in covering a major case making headlines within just weeks of a particular case making the news. The series features prominent experts in criminal profiling, criminal psychology, journalism, forensic science and more, as well as interviews with people associated with each case.
Front Page: The Steven Avery Story will air late January.
