According to photos posted by Jermaine Dupri, Usher and JD are back in the studio together. This marks the first time that the "Climax" singer and the Atlanta-based producer have worked together since 2004.
(It's worth noting that what came of the pair working in tandem was Confessions, which went ten-times platinum.)
"Me and Usher back in the lab." Dupri wrote along with the Pheed post. He's the one in the So So Def mascot head in the picture.
It's unclear whether the duo are merely working on a single or an entire new album. In fact, there's no guarantee that they are working on anything for release. But fans who've decried Usher's turn toward electronic textures over the last few years should view this as a good sign.
Dupri spoke on the possibility of a collaborating with Usher again in February.
It's a lot riding on your back. It would have to be something me and Usher sit around and talk about because it's not like we can just go in the studio because y'all gonna critique it against 'Confessions,'" he told the Urban Daily, though Dupri seems to be up for the pressure.
We just ain't gonna go into the studio one day and surpass what we already did [...A] lot if people don't want that weight. I don't mind it, but at the end of the day, Usher and I just need to have a conversation."
Whatever they end up releasing, it almost certainly won't end up selling 10 million records. 2004 was a different time before the internet entirely eroded record label's hold on their own content. At the time of Confessions release, physical media was still the way to go for many prospective music buyers.
What do you think? Are Usher and Jermaine Dupri back on? Will we have the next Confessions sometime soon? Are you excited for the possibilities? Be honest, do you still bump Confessions in the car?
Sound off in the comments.
