Last Week's episode of FX's The Americans, entitled "Truth and Duty," showed fans another side of Phillip in the aftermath of being interrogated by his own country and still taking on missions. We got to meet Irina, Phillip's past love, while on this New York City mission. Meanwhile Elizabeth holds down the home front while her husband is at a "Travel Agent Convention." So what is on the agenda for this week's episode, which is aptly titled "Mutually Assured Destruction"? (SPOILERS TO FOLLOW)
So Elizabeth's main plotline last week was contacting and obtaining a new contact after having to eliminate a previous one two weeks ago. She finds Sanford Price who, after a brief run in with a loan shark, gives Elizabeth some great information: laser defense systems!
In order to get rid of the Polish resistance leader, Phillip is sent up to NYC where he encounters his ex-girlfriend from Russia, Irena. Basically you could imagine what happens: they reminisce, flirt and then she reveals that they had a son together. Wait. WHAT? Yeah, who knows if she is telling the truth, though, because she immediately asks him to defect with her. Also they sleep together and their mission is a success. Elizabeth actually calles Phillip's hotel room to ask him to come home (extremely emotional scene). It looks like Phillip chooses Elizabeth over Irena, though he forgoes telling her about the hotel room activities.
Also Beeman finally kisses and then sleeps with Nina, who is really stepping up as one of the better characters on the show.
So where does that leave us for "Mutually Assured Destruction?" The show's official summary states: "Philip and Elizabeth must stop an assassin from taking out key US scientists, while Stan and the FBI hunt the same man. Grannie shocks Elizabeth with the truth of what happened between Philip and Irina in New York."
So much drama, you guys. Here is a clip of tonight's latest episode of the thrilling series, The Americans:
