Adam Sandler's had more than a few misses lately, with last year's Pixels tanking with critics and the box office. However, it seems his losing streak is over: Sandler's new film with Netflix, The Ridiculous Six, broke the site's record of most-streamed film in under 30 days!
According to GameSpot, Netflix's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, shared this week that Sandler's new western (which takes its title from films like Magnificent Seven and Quentin Tarantino's recent The Hateful Eight) just killed every market where Netflix is available: during its first 30 days, it got more views than any other movie ever has had in the streaming site.
"The Ridiculous Six, by way of example, in the first 30 days on Netflix it's been the most-watched movie in the history of Netflix," Sarandos told The Verge during the company's keynote at CES 2016. "It's also enjoyed a spot at number one in every territory we operate in, and in many of them it's still number one."
It seems like the Happy Gilmore star has found its new home in on-demand television.
The film currently holds a dismally "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a ridiculously high percentage: has anything else ever gotten a 0 percent before? Did you even know that was even possible? Out of the 28 critics who have reviewed it when looking at the site on January 9, all of them have given it negative reviews and the average rating is 2.3/10. So how can this be popular?
The reasons are unclear at this point, though GQ throws a few cheeky suggestions, such as the possibility that it would be a return to form to Sandler's older films and ended up "hate-watching it."
In any case, Netflix and Sandler have a contract for the next few years, and all of the comedian's upcoming projects will be on the site, so there will definitely be more like Ridiculous Six, particularly after the film's recent success.
