This past weekend, NBA superstar Steve Nash was pictured in attendance at a young boy's Bar Mitzvah. That 13-year-old Mike Feinberg even got the non-Jewish Nash to hold the Torah during the ceremony (kind of a big deal). When the photo was featured on TMZ, everyone was very confused as to why the Los Angeles Lakers point guard was at this religious coming-of-age tradition. It turns out, Mike's father Jeff is a huge basketball fan and incredibly wealthy.
Jeff Feinberg is a former executive hedge fund manager for Soros Fund Management, which is owned by the wealthiest hedge fund manager in the world, George Soros. Feinberg left Soros after a few successful years to start his own company, which has been doing very well. He reportedly was even in the running to become on of the Brooklyn Nets owners in 2009.
Feinberg is a huge basketball fan that has used his success and wealth to obtain many friendships with players and other NBA industry people, Steve Nash included.
Also, Jeff Feinberg's wife, Stacey, is the daughter of Bob Woolf, who was a legendary sports agent. His clients included Larry Bird, Doug Flutie, John Havlicek and, though he is not a basketball player, Larry King.
Mike Feinberg's Bar Mitzvah was apparently titled "BALL-Mitzvah" and included other NBA themes. The Laker girls were reportedly guests along with NBA legend Danny Schayes and the TNT Dunk Squad. Taking place in a warehouse setting, the dance floor included a few basketball hoops for entertainment.
