Morgan Creek and Open Road have released the latest casting news in the Tupac Shakur biopic movie. Known as the zombie slaying Michonne in The Walking Dead, actress Danai Gurira, has joined the cast of All Eyez On Me.
According to Deadline, The Visitor actress has been cast as Afeni Shakur, who also happens to be an executive producer on the upcoming film and the keeper of her son's estate. In the biography, a political activist and member of the Black Panthers, Afeni raised her son to be a voracious reader as a street poet, while being politically. awareness. The plot follows Tupac's rise to stardom as a hip-hop artist before his artistic career took a dive after his imprisonment and controversial stint at Death Row Records.
On her official Twitter account, Fear The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd tweeted about the casting news with great joy, sharing the Deadline source, "Check out what @DanaiGurira #Michonne is up to!"
And no, just because she's in the movie, that doesn't mean Hurd has any intentions of killing off Michonne.
As we previously mentioned, producer Randall Emmett dished on what to expect from the film itself, "I think our story, especially like a lot of biopics in the hip-hop space, will at least tease the beginning of his life, kind of tease his beginnings and kind of the people around him, then go into the key years leading up to the pinnacle of his success-those three or four key years of his rise, and the empire he built. He really defined it and paved the way for a lot of the great hip-hop artists we have today. We want to honor that, and that's what we're trying to do."
All Eyez On Me will be directed by filmmaker Benny Boom (Dice City), with Demetrius Shipp Jr. (#unlock'd) playing Tupac.
If you live in New York, Danai Gurira's play Eclipsed, moves to Broadway in March and her other play Familiar opens off-Broadway in the same month.
