Charlie Sheen revealed on Dr. Mehmet Oz's show that he was sober for 11 years before he was diagnosed HIV positive four years ago. The Anger Management star also discussed his controversial HIV treatment with a doctor in Mexico.
Sheen, 50, told Oz he'd had his addictions under control for over a decade but turned to drinking and drugs to "to suffocate the anxiety and what my life was going to become with this condition and getting so numb I didn't think about it."
"It was the only tool I had at the time, so I believed … that would quell a lot of that angst, a lot of that fear," he said. "And it only made it worse."

Sheen revealed in November he was HIV positive during an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show.
The former Two and a Half Men star was diagnosed in 2011 but chose to go public with the diagnosis only after he was being blackmailed.
Sheen told Lauer, "I’m here to admit that I am, in fact, HIV-positive. I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of subtruths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me threatening the health of so many others, which couldn’t be further from the truth."
He said he had paid millions of dollars to keep people quiet about his condition.
Sheen told Oz that revealing the news on the Today show was a huge turning point in his life. "The geography of it was very symbolic," he said. "I was leaving something behind and starting a new journey."

During the interview, Sheen told Oz that when he was only 28, he dreamed he looked sickly and was wearing a sign around his neck that read "AIDS."
The actor also told Dr. Oz he had been off his HIV medication for a week, stating, "Am I risking my life? Sure. So what? I was born dead. That part of it doesn't faze me at all."

Sheen said he was being treated by a doctor in Mexico named DSam Chachoua, who claims to be working on an HIV vaccine.
Chachoua told DOz that Sheen was "the first adult in history to go HIV negative," which is actually false. Later in the show, Oz implored Sheen to go back on his meds.
Sheen said he is determined to fight the disease. "This disease chose the wrong person," adding that he was now "focused, sober [and] hopeful."
