Baron Davis is reported to be eyeing an NBA comeback. According to his agent, Todd Ramasar, Davis plans on signing with the NBA's Development League soon, making a debut anytime after Jan. 20. The 36-year-old hasn't played a game since injuring his knee with the New York Knicks in 2012, however, he's been working hard to get his body right for for a potential return to the league.
"He is looking forward to playing in the D-League and showing teams what he is capable of," said Ramasar, via Yahoo! Sports. "He feels that the timing is right. More than anything Baron has put in the training and is confident in his body. He feels he is ready to return to the NBA."
In his 13 years in the NBA, Davis played for the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Knicks. He averaged 16.1 points and 7.2 assists over that span, according to SB Nation. And while he has been out of the NBA for a few years now, he did play competitively in the Drew League Pro-Am in Los Angeles last summer.
A big motivating factor in Davis' comeback, though, is the fact that he wasn't able to finish his career the way he would have liked.
"Every pro athlete wants to retire on his terms," said Ramasar. "His current last game wasn't the way he wanted to go out. He is very excited about the D-League."
Once Davis signs with the D-League, he'll be entered into the NBA's player pool. He would then be selected based on the waiver preference order, a list that the San Antonio Spurs affiliate in Austin top. However, Davis has said that he has no preference on where he plays.
