CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" doesn't need any help, but they are getting it anyways. Legendary comedian Bob Newhart will guest star on the hit CBS sitcom Thursday, May 2. "The Big Bang Theory" is consistently one of highest rated TV shows and it will be getting a little extra added attention with Newhart guest starring. Newart's appearance on the Chuck Lorre production will be his first on a TV sitcom in nearly a decade.

TVLine.com reported that six-time Emmy nominated star of "Newhart" and "The Bob Newhart Show" will make a guest appearance on the show, playing Professor Proton, the former host of Sheldon's favorite science show as a kid. It turns out, Newton's character played a major role in Sheldon and Leonard's childhoods. Once they find out that they can book Professor Proton for events, they jump at the opportunity. The episode is scheduled to air Thursday, May 2.

"Big Bang Theory" continues to be a ratings hit for CBS. The series is in its sixth season, averaging over 18 millions viewers an episode in 2012-2013. Another major help to the shows ratings has been its syndication on TBS and other channels. Syndicated episodes of "Big Bang" rank among the highest rate cable programs. It's hard to miss the show when channel switching. CBS has long been known as a network for older viewers, but Chuck Lorre's "Big Bang Theory" has skewed the network into a much needed younger audience.

For those who aren't familiar with Bob Newhart, he is an 83-year-old comedian known for his deadpan and stammering comedic delivery. Newhart has made appearances on a number of popular TV shows, including "The Simpsons" and "NCIS." Newhart won three Grammy awards in 1961 for his comedy album "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart."
