The Bluejays blasted their way into this tournament by winning the Mountain Valley Conference tournament. Cincinnati took the more subtle route of being really good all year. This marks the 3^rd straight year that the Bearcats have gone dancing, while Creighton is on their second consecutive trip to the tournament.

Creighton and Cincinnati have a set of brothers that are both prominent members of their faculty.

Momoro Ono is a music professor at Creighton while his brother Santa Ono is president of Cincinnati. The brothers have agreed to wear the opposing teams gear for a day should their school lose.
