Ahead of the Academy Awards nominations earlier this week, 29 of Hollywood's biggest stars, particularly Oscar contenders, have gone Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler in a gender-swapped exercise of Gone with the Wind's last scene and its famous quotes. People like Cate Blanchett, Samuel L. Jackson and Bryan Cranston act out the iconic scene, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh style!
W Magazine enlisted 29 of the biggest names in Hollywood, all of who were pretty relevant during 2015, to quote the famous last scene from the iconic Civil War story written by Margaret Mitchell in the '30s. To spice things up, the actors were asked to play the role of Scarlett, begging Rhett to stay, while the actresses had to be the ones to say Gable's iconic line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
The results varied from hilarious (Jackson's particular brand of Southern belle looks a lot like Titus Andromedon from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, for example) to the more serious ones. Eddie Redmayne's small rendition of the lines made famous by Leigh, for example, are both beautiful and haunting.
Blanchett, often considered one of the best actresses of her generation, teases by saying she's putting on her "acting face," then cheekily wondering whether the experiment is to say that men are just better at saying Gable's famous line.
Still, the montage is fantastic, with comedy stars like Kristen Wiig and Seth Rogen being paired up with the likes of Hollywood legends Jane Fonda and Richard Gere and even Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie.
According to The Daily Mail, the clip is part of an ongoing series from W Magazine called "Casting Call," where some of Hollywood's top stars recreate iconic scenes. There's also one with a few cool ladies recreating Clint Eastwood's iconic .44 Magnum speech from Dirty Harry.
Really, they should just release different quotes acted out by big stars every week.
