Cable network HBO has long been synonymous with paid television. Not everyone has HBO, because you have to pay extra to watch its sometimes explicit content. The network is home to numerous television hits of past and present, like "Sopranos," "Boardwalk Empire," and "Girls." Word is the network may soon be making it's HBO Go online streaming service available to non-subscribers and consumers without cable.
When speaking to Reuters in an interview just published, HBO CEO Richard Piepler alluded to the possibility of HBO Go being offered to customers who dont' have cable. Piepler said, "Right now we have the right model. Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve."
HBO's cable network has nearly 30 million subscribers, with the company's streaming service offering HBO to 6.5 million customers. HBO GO's online streaming service is free for people who pay for the service through their cable provider.
Based on Pepler's interview with Reuters, it seems like there are still a lot of things that need to be worked out in order for this service to be offered and become successful. HBO already brings in billions of dollars with its existing setup, so it may not make much sense for them to mess with what's working. However, it's not a bad idea for the company to be looking ahead, since the market and industry are changing at a rapid pace.
It may be some time before HBO makes its online streaming service available for non-subscribers. In the meantime; however, Hulu Plus and Netflix continue to expand their channels for consumers, offering channels to consumers for a monthly fee.
