In the upcoming Suicide Squad, when the government has a mission too hot for the superheroes to handle, they send in the bad guys to take care of the business.

Check out the top 5 Suicide Squad graphic novels you should read right now:

5) Suicide Squad Vol.1 Kicked in the Teeth

Collecting the first seven issues of the New 52,  writer Adam Glass and artist Federico Dallocchio feature the death row super villains involved in a prison riot at Belle Reve Penitentiary. After seeing this baddie in the second season of The Flash, you have to check out how King Shark becomes a member of this group.

4) Harley Quinn Vol.1 Hot In The City

By artist Amanda Conner and writer Jimmy Palmiotti, this is an amusing and entertaining take on the female anti-hero. In her very own solo series, Harley finds herself without her Squad goals and deserted by her ex-lover, The Joker. Hilarious on her own, Quinn even breaks the fourth wall and talks to the readers.

3) New Suicide Squad Vol.1: Pure Insanity

Writer Sean Ryan included  some new additions to the group, mainly  Black Manta, Deathstroke, and Joker's Daughter. But the biggest change to the dynamic is the arrival of Slade Wilson, Deathstroke The Terminator. Though Deadshot had an important role in the squad, he feels threatened by the growing  tension with Deathstroke.

2) Batman: The Killing Joke

Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by artist Brian Bolland, The Killing Joke took the comic book medium to a mature and gritty level. The inspiration behind Heath Ledger's award winning performance in The Dark KnIght, the clown prince of crime has so many split personalities, he doesn't know which one is real. He intends on bringing chaos to order by taking out the one thing Police Commissioner James Gordon loves the most; his daughter Barbara Gordon.

1) Batman: Harley Quinn

Drawing realism to perfection, comic book lovers should not miss out on the absolutely stunning cover by the legendary artist Alex Ross. In this collection of Harley Quinn short stories, one of the tales is written by Paul Dini, from Batman: The Animated Series. The popular cartoon introduced audiences to Harley and made her a runaway hit, especially when she teamed up with Poison Ivy.

DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League airs Tuesday, January 19 on the CW at 9:30pm.
